Watch Julie's Story

Julie Ozon was born and raised in Egypt. In 1949, the region became too unsafe, and Julie, her parents, seven siblings and their spouses all fled Egypt. They escaped by boat, and made their way to France. When Julie and her family fled Egypt, they were forced to leave behind a very successful family business, their home in Cairo, as well as a vacation home. They did not have the option of taking their possessions along with them either — they escaped with some clothes and nothing else.

Julie and her family spent six months in France, before immigrating to Israel. Upon arriving in Israel, they lived the next eight years in a tent camp, under poor living conditions. Eventually, Julie married. Her and her husband had four children, two girls and two boys. However, her husband died unexpectedly, leaving her to raise her children alone.

Despite the hardships Julie has faced, she keeps moving forward. She went on to become a chef, and opened Julies’ — an Egyptian eatery located in Tel Aviv, Israel.
